The general and his aide-de-camp passing the sentry guards at one of the entrances: ‘General Herr von Steinecke was a portly, white-moustached old gentleman, who obviously bore us no special ill will and who was especially kind to the French.’

Outside the parcels office, New Year’s Day, 1916: the carts were pulled by the prisoners, ‘yoked like horses’, from Hiltrup station, a few miles away: ‘Were it not for these food parcels, sent from England and France, many prisoners would have died of hunger.’
